The 2009 Chrysler Aspen is available in Base or Hybrid trims in 2WD or 4WD configurations. Both models are powered by a 5.7L V8 HEMI engine that generates 335 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque. The Hybrid adds electric motors to the 5.3L engine increasing total output to 385 horsepower. The 5.7L V8 HEMI engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, while the Hybrid models is equipped with an electric continuously variable transmission (ECVT). Unlike conventional continuously variable transmissions, however, the two-mode full hybrid's electrically controlled system uses no mechanical belts or bands. Shifts between the two modes are synchronous - meaning no engine speed changes are necessary for the mode shift to occur - resulting in seamless accelerations.
